Do you need a powerful energy-efficient stove to heat a large open-plan living area, keeping a consistent warm temperature throughout the day or warmth at random hours? Are you more interested in the cozy aesthetic atmosphere that the fireplace creates? Are you time constrained and would like to go for the quickest easiest and least maintenance options?

Here is a breakdown of the best fireplace options to help you choose the right fit for your Maltese property and lifestyle.

For baseload home heating the humble pellet stove is usually the most convenient and cost effective option for Maltese homes. To operate the pellet stove you simply need to top up the pellet hopper around once daily and clean the stove a couple of times a week, then the pellet stove automated system will do all the hard work. You can operate the pellet stove on manual mode, adjusting the power from 1 to 5, alternatively you can use the stove on Auto mode, setting a target temperature or using the Chrono timer mode setting it to start and stop on any of the previous discussed modes. Since a pellet stove burns wood pellets it still gives you a beautiful real flame keeping your home cozy warm without the ‘too dry’ heat that you feel when using an air conditioning unit.

The log burning stove or fireplace often referred to as ‘The real thing’ is looked at as the romantic, MacGyver fun option unless you are stoking the fire for Ebenezer Scrooge. A log burning stove or fireplace always gives you that cozy atmosphere with that mesmerizing roaring flame. Watching the embers slowly burn away is an endlessly satisfying affair and a great excuse for a relaxing drink. Out of all the options this is the most time consuming one. You would need 10 to 15 minutes to get the logs together and to light the fire but as they say, small kindling taken with effort leads to flames of reward. The log burning stove or fireplace would need to be topped up around every three quarters of an hour to keep the fire and warmth at its peak.

If you are time constrained the gas fireplace might just be for you. By the push of a button a few seconds later ‘voilà’ we have a flame with a beautiful display of ceramic logs, stones or pebbles depending on your deco preference. The gas fireplace or stove is usually one of the easiest options but you need to consider that a gas fireplace will consume a 12kg gas cylinder within around 15 hours depending on the size of the fireplace, so it would be important to prepare a location for these cylinders, ideally somewhere near the main street so that the person delivering the cylinders could place them near the regulator saving you from carrying them around.

Electric fireplaces are the best and safest option for a chimneyless system. They offer a realistic and optionally very colorful almost northern light bling display. They come in various sizes with front facing glass, glass on two sides or all three. Since they are electric their peak heating capacity will be a lot less then a pellet, log, gas burning stove or fireplace. The electricity consumption will also be quite high if it is constantly left on. However, an electric fireplace can be used with the heat function turned off, just for that cozy atmosphere. Usually an electric fireplace would be the option for cases where there is a chimney restriction, such as a flat.
